![]() I'm not gonna break my kid's learning confidence simply because others might be grossed out. I carry wipes and hand sanitizer to make sure they and I are clean afterwards. Heck, I've let them sit down and then carried them, while on the toilet, behind a bush or corner so that they can go right away but still have privacy and space. I try to be as discreet as possible and provide as much privacy. I would have their little chair locked and loaded so I could just pull it out and pop it open in 10 seconds or less, and let them go. If we could go to the restroom easily, of course! But I'm not going to feel bad if I can't get the three year old to get up with me and all our stuff to the restroom while their little sister is about to cry because they don't want to pee their pullup or undies. □□♀️ Generally because I would have to pack up multiple kids and the toddler was sometimes so excited for the activity that they didn't realize/tell me until they were panicking. No homework help available, no space for the after school kiddos to hang out, no programs. So a persons decision to use a porta potty in the children’s section instead of the bathroom could have the section shut down for everybody for the entire day. You can imagine that sometimes the wait was very long. So when we had incidences like this, we had to shut down the entire section and call the 2 person custodial staff that was shared between 25 branches. The problem was because we were small Branch, our custodian left shortly after we opened to the public. For legal reasons, only custodial staff could clean up blood, feces, or urine. ![]() I worked at a small branch of a very large public library system. They are truly community spaces and I would urge everyone to adopt a community mindset when using them. Anyone can come in and enjoy services without the pressure of having to purchase anything. Please change diapers/ use toilets in the provided bathrooms.Įdited to add that if this happened during one of my story times as a librarian, even with a family I loved and had a great connection with, I would have pulled them aside afterwards to let them know it cannot happen again.Įdited again: I would like to add that public libraries are some of the last free “third spaces” available to us. ![]() Library staff already deal with way more bodily fluid situations than you think, and this doesn’t need to be added to the list. As a former kids librarian and a current nanny, please don’t do this.
